I do not think you can get a degree as an engineer on line. At least not one that is recognized by any company that would hire you.

The leading colleges for optices are the Univ. of Rochester, and Arizona State. You can also get into OE by getting a degree in Physics with an emphasis on optics from a lot of good colleges.

I want to take ALL of my classes online. sure thats worse than a real in class experiance but its better than nothing at all

Almost every major, and most minor, university in the US offers courses online these days. It’s just no big deal. Many offer degrees wholly online.

Some of the for-profits (UoP et al) are regionally accredited.

The following well known universities have online classes and they are RA as well.

Harvard, UMass, Boston U, U Fla, Brigham Young, UCLA… in fact, just surf of to University of [your state] and see what they’re offering.

It’s NOT worse at all — the research says it’s harder and you learn more. Check it out on Google scholar. The only difference in online/classroom is that the online folks miss out on those more important drinking, drugs, and babe/dude social interactions.

How is watching a streamed video of a Hawking lecture on physics “worse” than listening to Tommy Jones the grad assistance deliver a physics lesson?

I’ve been doing research and the school that had the program I wanted discontinued it after not much interest. (Kaplan) This particular school only has associates in my field of interest.

I’ve been looking at brick and mortar schools in Illinois, Chicago mainly (where I work full-time) and I am having no luck.
I am a non-traditional student and I was wondering are there other colleges/universities in the US that offer online degree programs that are fully accredited.

In Chicago, I’ve searched UIC, DePaul, Loyola, U of C, IIT, Columbia College, etc. and have not found one program fitting my criteria. Either they are only nationally accredited or don’t offer the program I am looking for. I would love night and saturday classes but it would take too long to finish a BA this way.

If anyone has any recommendations, please share. Don’t mention schools like Univ. of Phoenix (too many bad reviews).

I did a search for accredited bachelor degrees in web development and found this site that might be helpful. They mention strayer and westwood university have programs.

There are a whole bunch of them. Try to find a copy of Bear’s Guide to Non-Traditional Programs, by Dr. John Bear. It is the alpha and omega on this subject.

I do not know of a comparison website for the cost of online programs (I have spent time myself looking for any types of comparisons relating to online programs). I am continuing to look.

About the pricing, I think you will generally find online programs to cost the same as or more than on campus programs. It has nothing to do with how good an online degree might be versus on campus, or with the fact that you are likely to take less of the instructors’ time if you are online than if you are on campus.

It has to do with the cost of delivering online programs.

1. Someone has to videotape the lectures, and that requires someone to be there, running the equipment, the whole time.

2. More preparation has to be done by the instructors, because online is actually an extra class section that they have to keep track of and grade (in some cases, instructors are compensated extra for their online work).

3. The lectures have to be made so that they can be streamed to you, on demand. The technology for doing that is readily available, but it is not yet cheap.

4. Separate websites have to be maintained where you can get class materials, check on homework assignments, get special announcements, etc.

5. The online programs that are run by online only universities are typically part of for-profit enterprises, so they must cover all of these costs and make a profit margin!

You sometimes see online programs with corporate sponsorships, and this helps to defray the cost. But without that, things can get tough for the school.

I know of one program at a major (nonprofit) university that operates at a loss, even with good enrollment.

Bottom line is that you, the student, pays heavily for the convenience of not having to physically attend class.
