Question by LR Girl: Best MBA Degree Programs? Do online grad degrees seem a dime a dozen??
I have recently graduated with my bachelors degree in Business Management and am questioning what to do about grad school. Online courses with someone like University of Phoenix sounds convienient and yet, I am worried that they are a diploma mill and viewed as such by employers. Does attending a local university and obtaining an MBA hold more weight in the business world?

The short answer is Yes, definitely.

But it depends on your career goals. On-line may go faster depending on your motivation and you won’t have to move to go to a program that accepts you. Going to school in person helps you to develop relationships with others and to find people who are like minded.

I would recommend going to school over an on-line course 9 out of 10 times. If you are someone who is unable to dedicate the time to grad school and need to move at your own pace (for example if you’ve got kids at home and the only time you can work is after they go to bed) then on-line is for you. Other than that, all the advantages are in the grad school experience.

Also, I think those on-line places are pretty expensive but I’m not sure of the comparison.

Find a bricks and mortar university and sign up. Many classes you can take on-line. Others you will have to attend in person. If you are going to spend time and money on a degree do it from an accredited university, or your degree will be worthless. On-line degrees are not respected, and most are meaningless. (college professor)

I would like to hear about your experience while taking classes online for your Master’s Degree in Information Systems or similar IT degree.

I would also like to know how much it cost per class or credit hour.

Basically, I am trying to receive a solid degree without having to break the bank.

Check out JustColleges, they have case studies on people who’ve studied via online colleges and also have a good list of colleges that offer online masters degree’s in various subjects.

To my knowledge the only fully on-line program is teacherbuilder.com, but they are only for alternative certification. I am in Texas too.

The University of Maryland may best suit your needs. You will need to pay out of state tuition if you are not a Maryland resident. Just as good is the University of Illinois, with the same tuition proviso. If you want to study one of the few majors offered and live in one of the western states (except California) or in Indiana, you might be interested in Western Governors University where you will will not have to pay out of state tuition if you reside in a participating state.

Also, your own state university may have a program which meets your needs and for which you will not have to pay out of state tuition. Stay away from private on-line schools. Few are worth the money.

There are tons of online programs. I personally attended American Intercontinental Univ. and Capella University, and I have taught for various online schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Online courses tend to vary in price, so we could say they are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.

You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!
